To understand the value of Swat Heritage we must first know what heritage is? What is the importance of heritage? How does the world treat heritage? And what do/should we do with our heritage?

What is Heritage?

Things that pass down to an individual from his forefathers or to a society or nation from the past times or ancestors are called Heritage.

For example: Language, Folk tales, songs, skills, traditions, buildings, system of government and other achievements etc.

Heritage is tangible and intangible.

Tangible or material heritage includes, monuments, buildings, statues, paintings, books and gardens, things that we can see or touch.

Intangible or immaterial heritage is language, literature, skills and know how, customs and traditions, form of government,  folk tales, songs, and music etc.

heritage has a formatting/moulding  influence on the attitude and behaviour of people and nations.

Apparently it seems that heritage is opposed to development and progress but in reality it serves as a foundation for development.

Why is heritage important?

Our world is a beautiful creation of God. To live in this beautiful place it is the responsibility of  men/women and nations to sustain, and develop this beauty not to consume it only. This addition of good and beautiful things to the beauty of the world is to me what we can call heritage.

God has gifted us this beautiful world full of bounties. Isn’t it our duty to hand it back to Him just as it is given to us by Him? It is on the bases of these constructive or destructive interventions by men/women and nations  that places  great and small are allotted to them. What place do we work for? Great or small?

Secondly it is on the bases of heritage that men and nations make their plans to work in the present to achieve their development goals for the future.

Heritage is the distance covered by generations of mankind and nations in the past towards their development. And it is from this distance covered towards development that people and nations determine how much more and in what direction they have to travel. The present generation can’t ignore the work done or distance covered by the previous generation.

The reason is that the journey of development is so long and tedious that it takes centuries and generations to complete. It is not the work of only one generation.

The best way to complete this journey is for the present generation to consider and add to  the work, research and achievements, by the previous generation and then leave their work to the coming generation. In doing so  the standard of work of the ancestors should be maintained, surpassed and in no way degraded.

By development we mean both material and immaterial development. It includes physical, spiritual, cultural, educational, architectural, scientific, and literary development.

Thirdly it is on the bases of heritage that people and nations strive for a distinguished place in the community of nations. It shows what is the contribution of a nation to world civilization.

Fourthly an individual always likes to have something as inheritance from his predecessors, the same should be thought about the coming generations. That is we must leave something worthwhile for our youngsters.

Fifthly a mother is considered as the first school of a child. What she teaches her child is nothing but the good of his forefathers and society that has been inherited.

Sixthly it is a source of inspiration for the young generations of a nation or community. It develops a sense of oneness, unity and identity among members of a nation.

Seventhly it is and can be a source of income for nations and communities when utilized as heritage tourism.

Most importantly heritage has a formatting/moulding  influence on the attitude and behaviour of people and nations.

Apparently it seems that heritage is opposed to development and progress but in reality it serves as a foundation for development.

Thus to preserve heritage  is to enable the young generations to follow the footsteps of their ancestors towards development. And the only development that is based on one’s heritage is true and lasting development.
